English description provided by the architects.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a lightweight architectural installation conceived as both exhibition object and public pavilion, exploring how minimal structures, craft, and movement can create quiet spaces of gathering within Dhaka's dense urban fabric.

Rooted in the environmental realities of the delta—marked by water, monsoon cycles, and fragile ground—the project responds to a context where architecture must remain adaptable, porous, and temporally aware.

Designed with a dual life, it transitions from gallery artifact to urban canopy, negotiating between representation and use. Within a compact footprint of just 113 square feet, it achieves spatial generosity through lightness, reversibility, and ease of assembly, disassembly, and relocation.

The installation takes the form of a hovering tensegrity dome suspended above a shallow circular basin. Slender rods, tension cables, and loose red ropes establish a delicate equilibrium, enabling the structure to remain responsive rather than fixed.

Lightness operates here not only structurally but atmospherically—an object that appears to hover, creating an ambiguity between permanence and ephemerality. Subtle movements induced by wind or human presence animate the canopy, introducing a temporal dimension to space.

During its exhibition phase, the basin becomes a conceptual ground: a shallow pool in which detailed 3D-printed models—a mosque, temple, bazaar, and household—float lightly above water.

Representing the architects' body of work, these miniature pavilions collectively evoke the layered existence of life in the monsoon delta, where spirituality, commerce, and daily rituals are all manifested through pavilion-like forms.

The reflective water surface anchors the composition, collecting rain during monsoon showers while amplifying light, sound, and seasonal change.

Through the interplay of dome and reflection, the spatial experience extends beyond its physical limits, while integrated seating along the perimeter encourages pause, observation, and informal gathering.

Material exploration remains central to the project's identity. The translucent canopy is made from jute-based textile sourced from a peripheral industrial zone of Dhaka, where it is typically mass-produced for sustainable shopping bags.

By transforming smocking—a hand-weaving technique commonly used in garments—into an architectural strategy, the fabric acquires volume and structure. At this scale, it produces soft folds that filter light and air, embedding local craft knowledge within a contemporary spatial system.

In its second life as an urban canopy, the installation is relocated to a public park between a lakeside edge and a children's play area beneath a banyan tree.

Here, the basin transforms into a small ecological pond with aquatic plants, while the canopy provides shade and a place of rest for diverse users. The project thus extends its lifecycle, shifting from object to infrastructure, from display to everyday use.

The work resonates with an architectural sensibility that foregrounds fragility, material expression, and the presence of objects within landscape—echoing, in part, the approach of Smiljan Radić.

Drawing on the sensibility of wabi-sabi, it embraces impermanence and subtle irregularity while remaining grounded in the specific climatic and social conditions of Dhaka, where lightness becomes both an environmental and ethical necessity.

Through its tensegrity system and crafted textile canopy, the project proposes lightness as an architectural ethic—one that embraces impermanence, adaptability, and coexistence within the shifting terrain of the monsoon delta.

Its title, drawn from Milan Kundera, is reinterpreted as a spatial condition where lightness carries weight, and presence is sensed rather than defined.
