Located in the agricultural setting of Burgães, the former Eira da Quinta do Cruzeiro is converted into a house through an intervention that preserves its rural character and strengthens its connection to the landscape.
The project follows a simple approach: work with what already exists, improving it without distorting its identity.
Originally divided into two small volumes, the building required a solution that brought coherence without erasing its history.
The key move was the introduction of a central wooden core that passes through the party wall and links the two bodies.
This element concentrates the main infrastructures and reorganises circulation, allowing the interior to function as a single, continuous space suited to contemporary living.
Chestnut wood was chosen for the interior flooring due to its durability and its strong presence in local construction.
Its warm tone works as a counterpoint to the existing stone, creating a balanced relationship between old and new.
Outside, a large part of the original granite paving—around 60%—was removed, cleaned and reused in new paths and steps, following a clear logic of material reuse.
The project is intentionally contained. Rather than transforming the building into something different, the intervention focuses on reinforcing its essential qualities.
The new Casa da Eira takes on a new use while keeping the character that has defined it for generations, maintaining a straightforward and respectful dialogue between memory, landscape and material.
