Centuries ago in Sri Lanka where there were no vehicles there were pavilions/ resting places along the roads for the travelers to rest.
Some were sponsored by the king and some were done by local leaders and villagers. These were done mostly out of timber and some of these beautiful structures are still remaining.
BAABAR was assigned to design a timber pavilion for a private land surrounded by paddy fields and lush mountains. An existing natural stone with a water retainer was selected to erect the structure.
Thus the column base is natural stone and there are four stone columns placed at four corners for the timber structure to rest on. The timber structural system is directly inspired by the traditional Ambalama structures, though the proportions are slightly altered for the structure to fit in with the surroundings.
