As a result of the building boom in Frankfurt´s Ostend district and the European Central Bank setting up home here, Sonnemannstrasse has started to attract the attention of the real estate sector.
Directly opposite the entrance to the ECB is this urban ensemble comprising four distinct buildings.
In the centre are two refurbished older townhouses, flanked by two new buildings.
The two existing buildings were in a poor state of repair, war damage still being evident, and so are being given a thorough facelift to allow them to shine again in their former glory.
The central projecting bay sections are new, a re-interpretation of the existing architectural design in line with the idea of careful continuation and progression in the urban landscape
The building on the corner of Windeckstrasse and Sonnemannstrasse has special significance due to its prominent position.
Staircases in the outer new buildings also provide access to the floors of the middle two.
The red-brown clinker building with its glazed bays, mullioned windows and profiled façade deliberately and respectfully cites the Expressionist architecture of Martin Elsässer’s wholesale market, completed in 1928.
