dingbat in the mountains

A young couple decided to build their home. Initially, their choice was a pre-fab-house, the “easiest and quickest way” to get a home. However, after two years of unsuccessful planning with a respective company they got in touch with us and asked us two design a single family-house.

They set us the following three parameters for their future home: A fire place in the living room white fir (abies alba) as material in the living room a black coloured facade on the outside Easy to solve The location of the future home is situated in Riezlern, a small town in a valley called Kleinwalstertal (Austria).

The property itself is located in the middle of the valley surrounded by two canyons. It is a sunny place with a brilliant view to the nearby mountains.
Furthermore, it shows a difference of altitude of about 2.5m from one part of the land to the other one.

The given topography allows us to design a house with the connection from the inside of the building to the landscape on all levels.

You enter the building from a massive concrete level to a lightweight wooden construction.

The latter has an interior out of white fir and an exterior out of black coloured fir. This facade was designed with an irregular and vertical pattern of four different width of wood.

The idea for it is based on the local and traditional wooden shields. The windows are set in the building according to the view, to capture the nature.

The typology oft he building is a LA style dingbat, adapted to react on the topography.

“A hiking trail passes by the house and it happened that tourists asked the young couple if they could hire this building.

They thought it is a vacation home – but it is only a vacation home for the owners who live there in permanent vacation. Ever since they moved in, they have the feeling of being in vacation.
