The front yard(madang) of MMCA Seoul face the Gyeongbokgung Palace which is very strong site-specific context.

These multi-layered placeness and time is a key issue of SoA’s practice.

There are three layers superimposed on this front yard which used to belong to Jongchinbu (Office of the Royal Genealogy in Lee dynasty), now is the open public space of MMCA Seoul, and be a platform for Y.A.P in the summer season.

Roofs are the outstandingly visible feature in traditional architectures in the Gyeongbokgung Palace. Roof of han-ok(traditional Korean style-house) should be large and heavy to reinforce the wooden pillars.

The structure of roof is exposed inside of han-ok, so under roof we could experience high and deep space, atmosphere, cool breeze, dim light, and shadow figure.

The lines of traditional roof compose the scenery with behind mountain. Due to be close to the heaven, big roof expressed and forged political, sacral, and societal connections.

With technology develops, roof become to be more thinner and lighter. As roof become to be thin and flat, roofs were stacked up and the stories of building grow. Under flat and invisible roof, we lack the skills to articulate the roof's primal qualities. Roof has lost the 'under-space' and all of these sentiments.

Project ‘Roof sentiment’ is a kind of wrinkle roof for uncovering people's feeling and sense. It also suggest the way of occupying madang(courtyard) temporarily. ‘Roof sentiment’ is made out of the reed’s blind which connects to one of the role of roof.
