Shakespeare On The Saskatchewan

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s first permanent structures establish the theatre company on its longtime site along the scenic Meewasin Trail and South Saskatchewan River.

The project sees the creation of Globe Theatre inspired tent and amphitheatre as well as three amenity buildings creating a cultural hub on the iconic river bank site.

The site redevelopment connects to the surrounding natural landscape and Meewasin Valley trail system while respecting the areas varied history and culture. Patrons, actors, staff, and volunteers are transported to a world separated from the city by the Meewasin Valley forest and the river.

Designed to reflect the company’s ethos of contemporary takes on familiar works, the buildings incorporate elements of the Tudor architecture of Shakespeare’s time into contemporary forms.

The project focuses on hosting theatre but has the flexibility to allow for other uses throughout the year. The amphitheatre allows for thrust, proscenium, and in-the-round stage configurations to suit different productions.

Designed with extensive consultation with the company and other stakeholders, the buildings and site respect Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s history, the area’s cultural heritage, and the site’s natural landscape.
