Drawing inspiration from the existing Arthur Erickson architecture and the striking coulee landscape, the new Science Commons creates an open, Transparent and welcome space for the study and observation of science in action.

The new Science Commons at the University of Lethbridge is designed by Stantec and KPMB Architects to foster a strong science community through the promotion of trans-disciplinary research, knowledge transfer and commercialization.

It was designed to bring that science community to the public, making the study and research spaces accessible to high school students, families, businesses and service organizations, as well as creating a resource for K-12 teachers.

We expressed an idea of “open science” by planning the building such that many dry and wet laboratories are placed alongside the internal public atriums and the major pedestrian “street.”

This is the opposite of the classic science building plan, which buried labs deep within the building, far from the public eye and any natural light.

The new building is open and bright, creating an environment in which students are encouraged to learn and be creative.
