Text description provided by architect.

For this project Dake | Wells Architecture wanted to highlight a daily ritual we rarely pay attention to, the lunch line. They animated this commonly mundane experience of waiting and elevated its progression.

A progressive, seemingly random array of linear windows dapple the lower portion of the west wall in this school cafeteria. As children form a lunch line against the wall, the varying heights and widths of the windows provide opportunities to tiptoe, squat, and peer at the view.

The affect of these windows also casts an array of shadows and light to animate the space within, thus creating an experience elevated above the mundane.

The building consists of masonry and a cantilevered metal screen wall that hides roof top equipment needed for the new kitchen. Inspired by nearby agricultural structures, corrugated metal panels form the screen and provides a surface for displaying event banners, while redefining the image of the school in the landscape.

Material choices are humble and reflective of the community, but brought to new life through thoughtful composition. Something old and comfortable becomes something new and invigorating for the school and community.
