Text description provided by architect.
The building is located in Doksan, the meatpacking district of Seoul, Korea. Founded in 1973, Doksan is one of the major meatpacking districts in Seoul.
As most of the traditional market in Seoul has been declined because of aging facilities and inconvenient transportation, Doksan is also in heavy decline.
The massive redevelopment plan including the 40-story office building was announced in recent years.
But, the abandoned warehouse in the area was remodeled to the Stardom Entertainment Office by D·LIM Architects.
In 2012, D·LIM also designed the Shesmedi Hospital which was remodeled from the warehouse store to maternity hospital.
D·LIM renovated the building very delicately and economically. The existing outer shell of the building is almost intact and vulnerable structures are selectively reinforced. The exterior cladding looked like rags because it was repaired several times.
But, the exterior old tiles are coated only with the dark grey paints because they are also the trace of the history of the building and district. D·LIM has only added new façade on the side facing the main street.
The colorful graffiti on the dark-grey wall are painted and the translucent polycarbonate panels are padded.
The graffiti art is the first album jacket image of the founder of the company. The translucent outer shell on graffiti images symbolizes the stardom's brand image. Stepping into the spacious lounge on the first floor, the trainees who want to be a star can see the lace lines on the floor.
The entrance is a starting line for them and at the end of the lines, the genial sunshine glares down through a courtyard from the sky light.
The staircase is moved to the space used for the car lift which is unnecessary any more. Most of the interior concrete finishes are exposed as they are, showing their rough textures.
As if the meatpacking district in Manhattan has been resurged to the most fashionable neighborhood from urban slums, D·LIM Architects expects the Stardom office to lead a new change of the Korean meatpacking district.
